Fall Protection Basics

  • Check guardrails, covers and anchors before work starts.
  • Inspect your harness and lanyard every use — no cuts, burns or broken stitching.
  • Ladders: three points of contact, extend 3 ft above the landing.
  • Know the rescue plan before anyone ties off.

Crew question: Where are the open edges on our site today?

Trench & Excavation Safety

  • Call 811 and confirm utility marks before digging.
  • A competent person inspects the trench daily and after rain.
  • Keep spoils and equipment back from the edge.
  • Never enter an unprotected trench — use sloping, shoring or a box.

Crew question: Where is the ladder or exit in this trench?

Forklift Pre-Shift Habits

  • Do the daily inspection before the first lift — tag out if defective.
  • Seatbelt on, forks low, look in the direction of travel.
  • Know the load capacity on the data plate.
  • Pedestrians: make eye contact and sound the horn at corners.

Crew question: Which aisle has the most foot traffic?

Lockout / Tagout

  • Notify affected workers before shutting down.
  • Isolate every energy source — electric, hydraulic, air, gravity.
  • Your lock, your key. Try the start button to verify zero energy.

Crew question: What stored energy could still move on this machine?

Heat Illness Prevention

  • Water, rest, shade — drink before you're thirsty.
  • New and returning workers need time to adjust.
  • Confusion or no sweating is an emergency — call 911 and cool them.

Crew question: Who is watching your partner today?

Road Work Zones

  • Set up signs and cones before stepping into traffic.
  • High-visibility vest on at all times.
  • Never turn your back to oncoming traffic.

Crew question: Where is our escape route if a car enters the zone?

Mobile Equipment Blind Spots

  • Get the operator's attention and a signal before approaching.
  • Walk-around before moving; berms must be mid-axle height.
  • Park with brakes set and bucket on the ground.

Crew question: Where are the blind spots on the haul truck?

Vehicle Pre-Trip

  • Tires, lights, brakes, mirrors and fluids every shift.
  • Secure every load — check straps after the first few miles.
  • Report defects; don't drive an unsafe vehicle.

Crew question: What defect would take this truck out of service?
